Emerging Trends in DevOps and Cloud Technologies for 2025
As Kampala Devops Community, we held our first webinar for the year 2025 titled Emerging Trends in DevOps and Cloud Technologies for 2025. The session featured different experienced speakers who shared trends and insights they anticipate for this year.

Below are the key trends identified for the year 2025:
More focus on cost management and analysis
Cost management is becoming a growing concern in cloud environments. Speakers shared the following insights. Adoption of FinOps strategy. FinOps, short for Financial Operations, is a discipline that combines financial management principles with cloud engineering and operations to provide organizations with better cloud spending visibility and control, enabling data-driven decision-making and maximizing business value.
Speakers also emphasized the following tips:
Usage of reservations (reserved instances) and savings plans
Usage of hybrid benefits. This is common on Azure as it allows you bring your own license and save costs on licensing.
Usage of budgets and alerts
Usage of spot instances
Usage of Infrastructure as code to provision environments for only when they are needed
Turning off idle instances during less active hours such as weekends
Utilize monitoring tools in order to right size resources accordingly
Review costs often and determine accordingly where to optimize
Continuous upskilling as cloud offerings evolve
AI
Artificial Intelligence tools are becoming crucial for Devops engineers out there. AI is helping engineers to enhance and streamline Devops operations. Some of the applicable use cases include; System failure forecast, infrastructure improvements, quicker debugging, improved scripting and templating, cost analysis and predictions, cost anomalies detection, security enhancements and advisories and low code platforms focused on Devops.
Security
Security is key this year. Insights shared around security include:
Security as Code (SaC) which is essentially the practice of automating and integrating security measures into the software development lifecycle (SDLC).
Increased focus and usage on Zero Trust
eBPF (Extended Berkeley Packet Filter) for Kubernetes environments -

CICD Trends
Increased adoption of GitOps and integration of DevSecOps in CI/CD pipelines will be a key trend this year. DevSecOps is the practice of integrating security testing at every stage of the software development process.
Rise of Platform Engineering
Platform Engineering in simple terms refers to building reusable tools and workflows to abstract infrastructure complexities for developers.
State of serverless
With a growing concern in huge cloud costs, serverless has been considered as a solution. The trend this year will be cloud providers creating more serverless offerings. Notable serverless offerings include; Azure SQL serverless, Amazon Aurora Serverless
Application monitoring and observability
Devops engineers need to assess trends in logs, metrics and traces. These can be done through usage of AI or Analysis tools that offer insights into logs, metrics and traces. Some monitoring platforms offer these as part of their offerings.
